Sam's desire is to find Jessica's killer by way of finding John, with no distractions. At the beginning of the episode they have very different viewpoints about what their basic goal is. In the midst of the unremarkable main story, Dean and Sam do have one specific conversation that is important for the direction of the series. When the M&Ms were introduced earlier in the episode they seemed to be just a typical smartass joke from Dean, but that joke was actually a nice set-up for having them reappear later. One bit I did like was when Dean used M&Ms as "breadcrumbs" to lead Sam to where he and the sister were taken hostage by the Wendigo. There are a few moments between Dean and Sam that are meaningful for the series as a whole, but for the most part, this is a forgettable chapter in the series. The teleplay was written by Eric Kripke, the creator of the show and writer of the first episode. This episode was directed by David Nutter, who directed the pilot, and yet it does not have the same sense of urgency or scare value that the pilot conveyed so well. I like the idea that they need to learn again how to hunt as a team, and it also makes sense since they have been apart for years. It is clear however, that they have different styles and the tension is thick every now and then when their approaches clash. There is obvious familiarity with each others' way of handling things, and when danger is at hand their teamwork is at its best. One of the few interesting parts in this installment is watching Dean and Sam deal with the readjustment of working together again. In a nice little moment, the sister wishes Dean luck in the search for his father. But since he was pretty obnoxious, we don't really care about him, and are happy when Dean and Sam are able to rescue the missing brother, reunite the siblings and deliver them all to safety. It is a cliché enough plot that when Dean and Sam meet up with the sister and brother who, along with a guide, are going to search for their missing brother, the guide is so arrogant and sure of himself we know he is going to be the first to die. The main story, like I said, is well-known to the genre: scary woods, spooky creature, missing person.
